The Lutheran Bible Institute
Class of 1965 40th Year Reunion

Newsletter, 2nd Quarter, June, 2005

The Reunion Date

Theme - "Eyes to see!  Ears to hear!"

The reunion is scheduled for Sunday, July 24, 2005, at the Perpich Center for Arts Education (formerly The Lutheran Bible Institute and Golden Valley Lutheran College Campus) from 12:30 PM - 5:30 PM.  A highlight of this year's reunion will be the "How Can I Keep From Singing" CD Release "party" - all of the existing music of John Seagard's choirs while at LBI / GVLC on CDs!  In addition, another keynote is the presentation by John Leonardson (see more below).  Finally, with our experience from the reunion five years ago, we are building more "socializing" time into the reunion schedule.  And, if there is interest expressed, then individual alumni can sign-up to do a 20-minute, "breakout" session on a faith-related topic of their choice (E- or snail-mail Larry Boatman [addresses below], with your proposed session topic).

John Leonardson, from the Class of 1965 (his "bio" here), accepted the request to be the presenter at this year's reunion.  And, that date, again, is Sunday, July 24, 2005!

Formation of Alumni Association Gaining Momentum

Since the database has succesfully been uploaded to Ingrid's laptop, the hope of putting together an "Alumni Association" is gaining momentum.  There's still no income, but one hope is that the "How Can I Keep From Singing" CD release (to be held in conjunction with the reunion) of all of the extant music of John Seagard's choirs at LBI / GVLC will be able to generate income toward this end.  CDs will cost around $17.00 each and the proceeds will be split evenly between the "Alumni Association" and Lutheran Bible Ministries.

Meanwhile, if you would like to become a member and support the "Alumni Association," then send a check or money order!

Rev. John Leonardson has worked in various prison-related ministries since 1980. He currently
serves as Executive Director of Exodus Ministries, an aftercare center serving families as the
parent leaves prison. Exodus has served over 500 families over the past 17 years. John formerly
served as Executive Director of the Coalition of Prison Ministries (COPE) a 20-year-old
international organization whose members are involved in all aspects of prison-related ministries.
COPE helps promote and grow these ministries through training, books and materials, conferences,
consulting and fellowship. Prior to coming to COPE, John was the North Texas Area Director for
Prison Fellowship. John also has served on the board of Restorative Justice Ministries Network of
Texas.

In April 2000, John founded MentorCare Ministries - Mentoring and Caring for Ex-offenders.
MentorCare concentrates on recruiting and training mentors to serve people coming out of prison.
MentorCare offers a mentoring manual and John travels around the country training groups in
aftercare mentoring. MentorCare also helps find jobs for ex-offenders which leads to a higher
success rate.

John has developed a four-month program, Preparing for Success on the Outside, for inmates near
release and it was awarded the Texas Governor’s 2003 Most Innovative Program Award. He is training
instructors and the program is now being used around the country. John and Marian have been
married since 1971, have three daughters and live in Bedford, Texas. Their first grandchild,
Spencer Lee Gaddy, arrived March 17, 2003.
