The Lutheran Bible Institute
Class of 1965 45th Year Reunion

Newsletter, 2nd Quarter, June, 2009

The Reunion Date

Theme - "Turning Points:  A Look at the History of LBI"

The reunion itself is scheduled for Sunday, July 18, 2010, in the Education Center of Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley, MN from 1:00 PM - 5:30 PM.  The rooms will be available beginning at 12:30 PM (and there is a one-half hour "clean-up" period from 5:30 - 6:00 PM [before continuing conviviality at a local restaurant]).

If you're from the Twin Cities area (or within easy driving distance), then you'll probably have attended your local church for worship on this date. Otherwise, Calvary Lutheran Church offers a series of worship services beginning indoors with "traditional" worship at 8:00 AM in the Chapel and 8:45 AM in the Sanctuary.  "Contemporary" worship services are scheduled at 10:00 AM and 11:15 AM and are held outdoors in Calvary Park (on the north side of the church) when weather permits. And, there is also a "Modern" worship service called "Journey" on Sunday evenings beginning at 6:30 PM in the Sanctuary, if you so desire.  Of course, you might also want to check out services at some of the other churches (from "Mega" through smaller denominations) in the Twin Cities area.  So, here are a few links which should provide a comprehensive listing of choices:

Highlights of this year's reunion include the Reverend Doctor Raymond F. Kibler III's (bio here) presentation on the early history of LBI and our own Ingrid Johnson's presentation on the latter history of LBI.  All of this history leading to a discussion of beginning a Golden Valley Lutheran College - Lutheran Bible Institute Alumni Association.  We continue building more "socializing" time into the reunion schedule.  And, if there is interest expressed, then other individual alumni can sign-up to do a 20-minute, "breakout" session on a faith-related topic of their choice (E- or snail-mail Larry Boatman [addresses below], with your proposed session topic).

Formation of Alumni Association Continues to Gain Momentum

Since a new laptop computer (which will eventually be given to the GVLC - LBI Alumni Association) is now the repository of the alumni database, the hope of putting together an "Alumni Association" continues to gain momentum.  There's still no income, but one hope is that continued discussion at GVLC - LBI reunions will generate ideas and action toward sustaining the dream.  One of the envisioned revenue streams includes the "How Can I Keep From Singing" CD Project (all of the extant music of John Seagard's choirs at LBI / GVLC on CDs).  CDs will cost around $20.00 each (including Shipping and Handling) with all of the proceeds going to the "Alumni Association."

Meanwhile, if you would like to become a member and support the "Alumni Association," then send a check or money order!

The Reverend Doctor Raymond F. Kibler III is Interim Intentional Pastor at First Lutheran Church, Burbank, CA, Interim President of LBI California, and Chairperson of the LBI California Board.  He studied for his BA degree at California State University - Long Beach, graduated from Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN with a Master of Divinity in 1977 and a Masters of Theology in 1986.  His first doctoral degree was in Ministry from the Claremont Graduate University School of Religion in 1990.  And, he most recently completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the Center for Advanced Theological Studies, School of Theology, Fuller Theological Seminary.  The title of his dissertation is "The Lutheran Bible Institute and the Augustana Synod, 1918 - 1932." As a historian, there is some indication in his dissertation of future work around this topic, perhaps, covering the period 1933 - 1962.  Pastor Kibler lives with his wife in Claremont, CA.
