Edna Loddigs Dies at 97

Mrs. Herbert G Loddigs

Edna B Loddigs. age 97, of Plymouth, MN, died on Wednesday, October 21, 2009.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert and her son, Paul. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Alice; granddaughters, Tova (Eric) Werlinger and Leah; great-granddaughters, Kayden and Lillian, and many friends & family.

Carol Hinderlie, of Holden Village, in remembering Edna Loddigs as one of Holden's "Saints," wrote the following for the All Saints Day Matins at Holden Village, November 4, 2009:

“. . . [A]s we remember . . . Edna Loddigs . . ., I cannot help but remember St. Mary Hinderlie [the first Program Director at Holden Village {and Carol's mother-in-law}] . . . .  Having spent 3.5 years in a Japanese prison camp, and having learned some things about survival along the way - ‘intellectual and emotional and spiritual as well as physical survival’ what [Mary and her husband Carroll] saw at Holden was the possibility of a place for conversation centering in Christian discipleship and embracing every topic and issue under the sun.  So they invited people who had ideas and strong opinions to come and let the gospel live in discussion, argument, controversy - and only the bravest even thought about coming.”

Mary, who was a scholar and a theologian, knew French, Greek, and Latin, as well as English, and was working on the following (freely adapted) translation from Philippians 4:4 - 8:

Keep on rejoicing in the Lord always;
again I say keep on rejoicing
(the joy of the Lord produces this).
Let your magnanimity be known to everybody.
The Lord is near. (Maranatha - I Cor 16:22)
Do not worry about anything, but in everything
by prayer and supplication with thanks thanks thanks
let your requests be known to God.
(Cast your bread upon the waters
and it will come back buttered
{Mary's reading of the verse from Ecclesiastes}).
And the peace of God over everything beyond understanding
will stand guard over your hearts and your minds
in Christ Jesus.
For the rest, “Brothers and Sisters
whatsoever is true,
whatsoever is awe inspiring,
whatsoever is just,
whatsoever is pure,
whatsoever is winsome, lovely,
if anything is excellent,
if anything is praiseworthy,
keep on embracing these things.
What you have learned and received and heard
and seen in me” keep on practicing these things,
and the God of peace will be with you.

Carol closed her Matins reading with this prayer,
“Imaginative God, thank you for the saints in our lives,
who are gifts of your love . . .
Amen”
